This FAQ shows you how to remove the product image gallery when there’s only one product image. Some templates do not take care of this automatically, so this is what you need to do.
Make the following change in media.phtml file:
count($this->getGalleryImages()) > 0
change this to:
count($this->getGalleryImages()) > 1
